Signed Russian space covers and photos...

Note: This catalogue must not be considered as an official and truth font for prices. It is just a personal compilation of the few material currently available on this topic, in which is included the GODE catalogue of 1988. However, this is probably the best information that you can find on the Net. Any comments concerning the improving of this section and others are welcome.

Since the begining of the space race, the russians never had much interest in produce space covers or space memorabilia. Instead, they bet on propaganda material and specially small photographs such as the ones shown below (Gherman Titov on the left, Adrian Nikolayev on the right).

Covers canceled at the launch and landing sites only arrived in the 70's and the price of those is sometimes extremely high, due to the small numbers produced.

As for the autographs, the fact that they are less requested by the collectors in the world (compared to the rush for the moonwalkers or Mercury astronauts), mean that the price of a signed item is not extremely high, even for deceased cosmonauts such as Yegorov, Beregovoy or Levchenko. However, this does not mean that they are more common, in fact, they are scarcer.

Part of the russian manned space program was only unveiled in the 1990's, with the names of early cosmonaut candidates (1965/68) being oficially released as late as 1991. Sometimes, the time between this and the time of their death were very close, or even too late... to request any signed material. So, like the americans Elliot See or Charles Bassett II, the early russian manned program is full of "mystery cosmonauts" and "mystery programs" such as the Zond program that would have sent the russians to the moon.

For instance, from the first group (selection of 20 cosmonauts), that took place in 1960, only 12 actually made a spaceflight - the names of the other 8 were anounced oficially only in April 1986. So, signed material from names such as Bondarenko, Varlamov, Nelyubov or Filatyev (all from the first selected group of 1960), must surelly be considered rarer then See ou Bassett, and they can not be found in the market - these are extremely rare items .

Furthermore, writing a letter to a cosmonaut and receving the material signed at home sometimes could take up to 2 years, and never less then 4 or 6 months - even if the person asking lives here in Europe (my case). Cosmonauts such as Feoktistov or Leonov, usually take a few years to respond, and this surelly lower the interest on collectors to write to them, and even collect russian signed space covers.

The following list, shows the average price of a cosmonaut autograph on a cover related to his flight (discarding the price of the cover), but do remember that some covers canceled at Baikonur sometimes worth dozens of dolars.

As for the price of autographed photos, they are lower (somethimes by 50%) then the value on autographed covers, because of the quantity of items printed (some postcards from the early cosmonauts were printed from 500.000 to 800.000).
